Mission
Training Rooted in Purpose
At Coquina Canine Dog Training, we believe strong bonds—like strong foundations—are built with patience, consistency, and trust. Just as coquina rock is formed from many small, fragile pieces united over time, we help dogs and their owners grow through small, intentional steps that create lasting change. Rooted in balanced training methods and guided by faith, we equip families to develop meaningful, structured, and balanced relationships with their dogs—founded on clear communication, compassion, and purpose.
Our Brand Story
Coquina Canine was founded with a clear purpose: to provide professional, relationship‑focused dog training that empowers dogs and their owners to succeed—together. Rooted in the coastal community of Wilmington, North Carolina, our approach blends structure, clarity, and compassion to support lasting behavioral transformation.
The name Coquina reflects the strength and uniqueness of the coquina shell—formed over time by natural forces, much like a well‑trained dog is shaped through consistency, patience, and skilled guidance. Our programs are thoughtfully designed to support each dog’s developmental stage, behavioral needs, and home environment—whether through foundational puppy work, advanced off‑leash training, or rehabilitation for complex concerns.
We’re committed to long‑term success by combining proven methods with individualized care, education, and ongoing support. Our goal is not simply obedience, but a meaningful, reliable partnership—built on trust, maintained through consistency, and strengthened over time.
Philosophy
Our Approach to Lasting Change
Faith-Based Dog Training
Faith-based training emphasizes trust, patience, and consistency, reminding us that true change doesn’t happen overnight. By committing to the process, owners build confidence and leadership while dogs gain clarity and respect
Relationship-Based Dog Training
This approach builds a partnership rooted in trust, where dogs choose to work with their humans out of understanding and connection, not just for rewards or to avoid punishment.
Balanced Training Methods
We use both rewards and fair corrections—always humane, never harsh—to guide a dog’s understanding with clarity and compassion
Meet Sydney Thrana
Sydney Thrana
Owner & Trainer, Coquina Canine Dog Training, LLC.
My journey into dog training began in my early twenties, when I started fostering dogs and quickly fell in love with their resilience, individuality, and capacity for change. But it wasn’t until I adopted two dogs of my own—one struggling with aggression and the other lacking confidence—that I experienced firsthand the life-changing power of structured, professional training.
At the time, our daily life was stressful and limited—filled with short walks and constant efforts to avoid triggers. It wasn’t the life I had envisioned for us. After sending them to a six-week board and train program focused on behavior modification, impulse control, and e-collar training, everything changed. I was finally able to enjoy the kind of freedom and connection I had always hoped for: off-leash beach days, calm neighborhood walks, and the confidence to explore the world together.
That transformation inspired me to help other families experience the same joy, clarity, and trust. I completed a three-month intensive dog training academy in Virginia and went on to train professionally there before returning to my hometown of Wilmington, NC. With over five years of hands-on experience, I now specialize in puppy development, off-leash obedience, and case-by-case behavioral rehabilitation for dogs with more complex needs.
At Coquina Canine, I combine balanced, relationship-based methods with a calm, coastal home environment where every dog receives the structure, guidance, and individualized attention they deserve. My mission is to help families and their dogs grow together, creating the life they’ve always dreamed of with their loyal companion.
Outside of training, I’m a mom to my 9-year-old son, Colton—my little dog trainer in the making—who you may see in many of the update videos during your dog’s stay. He absolutely adores every dog that comes through our program, and together we treat each one like part of our family. I’m also mom to three incredible dogs: Gracie, Mercy, and Zoey—all former fosters turned forever companions.
When we’re not working with dogs, you can find us at the beach, at the movies, or on the sidelines cheering for football and soccer. Coquina Canine is not just a business—it’s our way of life, and we’re honored to share it with every family we serve.
